Today’s Cancellation Culture

It’s a huge flaw.

One that’s got me into trouble more times than I can count.

Especially the older I’ve got.

It’s speaking from the heart.

More and more I’m told “You can’t say that”.

Spanning from Gen X to Gen Z.

Want to know why?

Because they fear the wrath of the cancellation culture.

I’m absolutely not talking racism, politics or anything inappropriate. It’s having a strong opinion and voicing it.

I feel it’s sad that in today’s times we’re ‘not allowed’ to say what we really feel.

Here’s an example…

Last week I attended an online meeting.

Two out of the four attendees were wearing baseball hats.

Without wanting to pull the ‘back in my day’ line, I felt (and still feel) it was disrespectful.

I understand the use of hats and caps. As you can see, I’m prone to wearing quite a few myself.

But never in a meeting or during training.

I was bought up to take my hat off as a mark of respect.

I doff my cap when I greet someone, and I will never fail to remove my headgear when I head indoors (bar requests ‘to put it on for the camera’ 😏).

These musings will probably open up a colossal can of worms – standing up when a lady enters the room, opening the door for a lady, walking on the right side of the pavement, etc.

What say you?

Would you wear a hat during a meeting or is it now confirmed that I’m a grumpy old man?!
